Meet Our Founder

The Flint Hills Iris Society was founded by Delores (De) McGlashon in 1998. She was well known in the area for touting iris as great plants, both for their many beautiful varieties and their adaptability. When people would complain that “iris didn't bloom long enough during a growing season”, she would always smile and simply reply “That's just because you don't have enough of them.” De passed away March 18. 2013 at the age of 82. We miss her enthusiasm, passion and energy and are grateful for her many years of service to The Flint Hills Iris Society and The KSU Gardens.

Learn About the Different Types of Iris

Bearded Iris are identified by thick, bushy "beards" on each of the falls (lower petals) of the blossoms. Originally, most of these were native to central and southern Europe. The American Iris Society has divided the bearded irises into five groups for garden judging awards.  There are also Dutch, Japanese, Siberian and Spuria Iris.
